Islamabad–Skardu Flights, Weather and the Road Alternative
Domestic flights to Skardu and Gilgit save one or two days of driving, but they depend on mountain weather. Our itineraries plan for both outcomes.
How the itineraries plan for it
When a programme flies north, its day plan says what happens if the flight does not operate: the group drives instead, usually via Chilas, and the following day adjusts. The same applies on the way back, which is why several programmes keep a rest or buffer day in Islamabad before the international flight.

What this means for your plans
- Book international flights with the programme's final Islamabad day in mind rather than the day you expect to land from the mountains.
- Expect a long road day if the flight is cancelled; the overland route via Chilas takes most of a day or more.
- Domestic flight tickets are listed as included in many programmes, sometimes marked as subject to availability.
Why mountain flights depend on weather
Flights between Islamabad and Skardu or Gilgit cross high, steep country where cloud, wind and visibility can change within the hour. When the weather at either end, or along the route, falls below what the airline requires, the flight is delayed or cancelled. This is a normal part of mountain travel in Pakistan, not an exceptional event.
- Morning flights are common because the mountains are often clearer early in the day.
- A clear day in Islamabad does not mean the route and Skardu are clear.
Planning around the flight
Because the flight can be cancelled on any day, the programmes keep the road option open and build spare days around the mountains. When you choose dates, treat the flight as a time-saver that may not happen, rather than the part of the trip everything else depends on.
- Keep the programme final Islamabad day in mind when booking your international departure.
- Pack so that a long road day does not leave you without what you need.
The road fallback via Chilas
When the flight does not operate, the overland route follows the Karakoram Highway via Chilas to Gilgit, then on to Skardu. It is a full day or more of driving, so the following day in the itinerary usually adjusts. The route is scenic but slow, and it is part of the reason the programmes include buffer days.
- Ask the team which overland route is used for your dates and how long it typically takes.
- Expect the fallback to be tiring; it is a long road day, not a short detour.
When the flight is not the right plan
If your trip has no room for a lost day, the flight is a risk, not a convenience. A fixed international departure the morning after a flight day is the classic way to be caught out. Use the flight when you have a buffer, and accept that the road may be how you actually travel.
- For a tight itinerary, assume the road and plan the flight as a bonus.
- Check how many spare days the programme keeps around the flight before you book.
Verifying schedules
Airlines change the Islamabad-Skardu and Islamabad-Gilgit schedules between seasons, and weather can stop a flight on the day. Do not rely on schedules quoted from memory or old trip reports; confirm current times with the airline or the team close to your travel date, and re-check the day before.
- Confirm the current schedule and any baggage limits for mountain flights before departure.
- Treat any printed schedule as a plan that the day weather can override.
