Glacier Treks in Pakistan
The Karakoram holds some of the longest glaciers outside the polar regions, and several of our routes travel on them for days at a time.

Before a glacier trek
- Glacier walking means uneven moraine, ice and crevasse zones; the Hispar La crossing is described as a long glacier pass.
- Choose a route whose length matches your experience: compare the tent nights above.
- Ask the team what equipment is provided and what you bring; climbing gear is listed as a member expense.
What makes glacier trekking different
On an ordinary trek you walk a trail; on a glacier you walk on moving ice, loose moraine and snow. Surfaces change from hour to hour, crevasses can be hidden under snow, and river crossings on the approach can be cold and fast. The rhythm of the day is slower and the margin for error smaller, which is why glacier routes need more time, better weather windows and experienced support.
- Glacier days are often longer than trail days for the same distance.
- Roped travel and fixed ropes are used where the ice or snow requires it, not for show.
Preparation and equipment
Fitness for glacier treks means walking all day on uneven ground with a pack, in sun and cold. Equipment follows the same logic: sturdy boots, warm layers, sunglasses and glacier glasses, and gear such as crampons or harnesses where the route calls for them. The programmes list climbing gear as a member expense, so ask exactly what is provided and what you must bring.
- Check whether crampons, harness and helmet are provided or are yours to bring.
- Sun and reflection off snow are intense; eye protection is essential, not optional.
Season, weather and route conditions
Glacier routes in Pakistan run in summer, when the snow bridges are strongest and the passes are most likely to be open. Even then, conditions change week to week, and a pass such as the Hispar La or Gondogoro La can close for a day or a season. Treat any itinerary as a plan that the guide adjusts to the conditions on the ground.
- The comparison table above shows which of our routes travel on glaciers and for how long.
- Ask what happens if a pass cannot be crossed, before you commit to dates.
Ordinary trekking vs technical glacier travel
Most glacier days are straightforward walking on rock and ice with a guide, but some crossings use ropes and fixed lines and require training, not just fitness. The distinction is the key to choosing a route: walking a moraine or a gentle glacier is very different from climbing a steep, crevassed pass or an ice face.
- Walking across a glacier on a guided trail is not the same as technical climbing; the guide decides what each section needs.
- If a route description mentions fixed ropes or a steep pass, treat it as more demanding than a valley or moraine trek.
Choosing a glacier route
Match the route to what you have done. A trek that includes glacier walking as part of the approach, such as the Baltoro to K2 Base Camp, is a big but non-technical undertaking. A crossing that requires roped travel, such as the Gondogoro La, asks for more experience and a team that knows the route.
- Be honest about whether you have used crampons or walked on a rope before.
- Ask the team what experience each glacier route assumes before you commit.
