Nangma Valley: Planning a Big-Wall Rock Climbing Trip in Baltistan

Nangma is a side valley of the Hushe region in Baltistan, ringed by granite spires that rise from grassy base camp meadows. It is one of the Karakoram's best-known destinations for big-wall and alpine rock climbing, with Amin Brakk (about 5,850 m) its most famous formation and a cluster of towers around 5,800 m beside it.

This guide covers what the valley offers, how our published climbing programme reaches it, when to go and what climbers need to plan for. It is written for experienced rock climbers; Nangma is not a place to learn.

What makes Nangma special

The Karakoram is famous for its granite, from the Trango Towers above the Baltoro to the walls of the Charakusa valley. Nangma brings that granite within a day's walk of a road. Our programme describes it as one of the best rock-climbing areas of the Karakoram, with objectives that range from moderate routes to high-altitude big walls, and a base camp on a grassy site surrounded by spires.

Because many formations stand close to base camp, a team can choose independent objectives, adapt to conditions and climb more than one line in a season. The scale is still serious: big walls here can take many days, and the upper parts of the towers are at altitudes where weather and cold dominate.

How the programme reaches the valley

Our 29-day Nangma Valley Rock Climbing programme flies from Islamabad to Skardu, with the road via Chilas as the fallback if the flight does not operate. After a day in Skardu to finalise arrangements, the team drives by jeep along the Indus and Shyok valleys and turns north up the Kande valley to the road head at Kande, the last inhabited village. The next day the team walks to Amin Brakk base camp, with the local team carrying food and equipment.

The itinerary then sets aside nineteen days for climbing, from day 7 to day 25, before the team walks back to Kande, returns to Skardu by jeep and drives south via Chilas to Islamabad. Kande lies on the way to the Hushe valley, so the Hushe Valley guide and the nearby Khaplu are useful background for the journey.

Season and weather

The programme's published season is June to the end of August. Summer brings the longest days and the warmest rock, but conditions vary widely: sunny faces can be pleasant while shaded walls stay cold, and afternoon storms and periods of unsettled weather are part of life in the Karakoram. Plan your objectives around the possibility of several days of waiting, and treat the nineteen climbing days as a window rather than a schedule.

Snow and ice can linger on ledges and in gullies early in the season, and the approaches to the higher towers may involve snow. Bring footwear and protection that suit mixed conditions on the upper parts of routes.

Planning your climbing

Experience

Nangma suits climbers who are self-sufficient on long traditional routes and, for the big walls, experienced in multi-day aid and free climbing, hauling and portaledge camping. Altitude adds to the difficulty: the summits are well above 5,000 m, so prior time at altitude is strongly recommended.

Equipment

Climbing gear is listed as a member expense on our programmes, so you bring your own rack, ropes, wall equipment and personal gear. The programme includes porters for members' equipment, food and camping crew, with a 16 kg porter facility for each member's gear; anything above that is charged separately at the porter rate per kilogram. Big-wall equipment is heavy, so agree the loads with us before you travel.

Communication and rescue

There is no reliable mobile signal at base camp. Teams usually carry satellite communication for weather forecasts and emergencies. Helicopter rescue fees and personal insurance are not included, so you need insurance that covers climbing at the relevant altitude and helicopter evacuation; our guide to travel insurance for treks lists what to check.

Life at base camp

The programme includes the guide, cook and assistant cook, camp food and a mess tent, kitchen tent and toilet tent, so the team can concentrate on climbing. Base camp is a grassy site with water nearby, and it becomes home for nearly three weeks. Respect the valley's grazing meadows, keep the camp tidy, and carry all rubbish out; our responsible travel guide explains how waste is handled in the mountains.

Other granite in Baltistan

  • The Charakusa valley above Hushe, approached on our Hushe Valley Biking Tour and visible from the Hushe treks, holds granite towers and the peaks K6 and K7.
  • The Trango Towers and the walls above the Baltoro glacier are passed on the K2 Base Camp trek.
  • For snow and ice rather than rock, our guide to choosing an expedition compares the summit expeditions.

Frequently asked questions

Where is Nangma Valley?

Nangma is a side valley in the Ghanche district of Baltistan, reached from the village of Kande on the road towards Hushe. Our programme drives there from Skardu along the Indus and Shyok valleys.

How long is the climbing window?

The published 29-day programme sets aside nineteen days, day 7 to day 25, for climbing on Amin Brakk and other objectives.

Is a climbing permit needed?

The programme is listed in the open zone. Requirements depend on the objective and can change, so we confirm the current rules for your chosen peaks when you plan.

Can beginners climb in Nangma?

No. The valley suits experienced climbers who are self-sufficient on long routes. Less experienced climbers should build experience on shorter alpine rock elsewhere first.

What does the programme include?

Flights between Islamabad and Skardu, hotels in Islamabad and Skardu, jeeps to and from Kande, porters with a 16 kg allowance per member, base camp staff, food and camp tents. Climbing gear, sleeping bag, insurance and rescue fees are not included.
