What to know about summer
- Glacier treks and expeditions to K2 and Gasherbrum III run in these months.
- The Deosai Plains are crossed by jeep, horse and bike in summer, when the plateau is accessible.
- Summer is the hottest time in the lowlands, so time spent in Islamabad, Lahore or Karachi will be hot.
Summer across the regions
Summer does not feel the same everywhere in Pakistan. In the northern mountains it is the main trekking and expedition season, with longer daylight and open passes; on the Deosai Plains it is the only time the high plateau is reachable; and in the lowlands - Islamabad, Lahore, Karachi - it is the hottest time of year. Plan each leg of your trip for the region it actually passes through.
- Mountain days can still be cold at altitude, especially at night, even in summer.
- Lowland city days are hot; keep them brief or schedule them for morning and evening.
Packing and preparing for summer
Summer in the mountains means strong sun, reflected light off snow and rock, and sudden afternoon rain. Pack sun protection, a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses and a waterproof layer alongside warm layers for cold nights. For the lowlands, light, breathable clothing and plenty of water matter more.
- Altitude still applies in summer: acclimatisation days are part of the programme, not optional extras.
- Monsoon-influenced weather can reach the mountains in late summer, so keep the itinerary flexible.
Choosing where to go in summer
The programmes in season from June to August are listed above, ordered by length. If you want big peaks and glaciers, summer is the window for K2 and the Baltoro; if you want green valleys and villages, Hunza and Nagar are at their most alive; if you want wildlife and open space, the Deosai Plains are only open now.
- Compare highest point and duration in the table above before choosing.
- Ask the team how a late-summer date affects conditions on your preferred route.
Week to week, not just season to season
Within a single summer, conditions move: June is often clear and settled in the mountains, July and August bring more monsoon-influenced cloud and rain to the lower ranges, and September usually clears again. Glacier and pass conditions also shift as the season warms, so a route that is easy in June can be slushy in late August.
- Expect more cloud and rain toward late summer on the lower, greener routes.
- High glacier and pass routes are usually best in the early to mid-summer window.
